The Double Shotgun Home, A New Orleans Origional!

The Shotgun Style of home originated in New Orleans beginning in the 1830's and extending to 1920's. This was the predominate style of home in New Orleans during that time. It was a narrow rectangle raised house on a small lot generally no wider than 25′. There were no hallways but you walked through one room to the next. Its was not until 1903 that people began to call them Shotguns, it was boasted that shooting a shotgun through the front door the buckshot would leave through the back door. A double shotgun is where the middle wall is shared, often times occupied by another family member. Thousands are still here !

I love this look in a home. We have a neighborhood called Riverside that has that style.
ERic, What an absolute wonderful history I am getting on the housing styles down in New Orleans. Keep it up!
They are great to read!
Jane, thanks for the comment. Started a photo blog and these type of posts are a great for New Orleans Neighborhood profiles. Take a look New Orleans Homes and Neighborhoods. Just started so have a ways to go.
Ted, Historic areas never seem to lose their appeal.
Eric - that is a stunningly beautiful home! I love the history you give in your posts.
Eric - We have a similar architectural heritage in St. Louis. We have a ton of these shotgun style homes (most not quite as elegant on the exterior as this one).
Ryan, There are a lot of similiar things in St. Louis and New Orleans. I noticed that when I would go there on business. Most likely a large Italian population as well. A lot of beer drinkers as well.
